The Raiders Off Road Club was started in the 90’s by a group of 4x4 enthusiasts who wanted a friendly club that would appeal to all offroaders, from the novice with his road legal 4x4 to the experienced offroaders with his highly modified trials vehicle, and everyone in between, male, female, young or old. All you need is a sense of fun and adventure, you don’t even need a 4x4 to start, someone is always willing to show you the ropes and give you the benefit of their experience. Once you’ve tried it you’ll be hooked.
Raiders Off Road Club is run by a dedicated group of people, organizing events all year round, RTV, Open and Modified trials take place normally on the last Sunday of the month. Winch Challenges are always well attended along with Greenlaning outings. Excursions to nationally organized events , Safari competitions and camping weekends.
Offroading is made up of several types of events as mentioned above.
Trials are courses set out an offroad site, a bit like a slalom downhill skiing course, 10 sets of canes are set out along the course at different intervals to test your vehicle over a variety of terrain’s. The canes are set out in pairs (gates), red flag to the left and white flag to the right. Each gate is numbered from 10 down to 1 and points are scored for each gate successfully negotiated, the winner being the driver with the least amount of points. There are 3 classes in this event RTV (road taxed vehicles), Open (not road legal, slight modifications) and Modified (significantly modified vehicles). Trials for modified vehicles have 15 gates.
Team challenges are generally team work (hence the name), Teams of three vehicles are put together with at least one vehicle having a winch. Up to 20 pegs are located somewhere on site, each peg has a punch attached to it by a piece of wire. A card is fastened to the near side of each vehicle, all team members have to get their vehicles to each peg and punch the corresponding number on the card. Also at set intervals the team will have to carry out “special tasks” and answer a set of questions. Hard work but great fun.
Greenlaning, organized runs to largely unused and forgotten rights of way, using OS maps, GPS and co-ordinates to negotiate Green lanes that are normally only accessible by 4x4’s.
Fun Play Days, informal days out at various off road sites throughout the North East.
Why not come along to the monthly club meeting and have a drink and a bite to eat, meet the some of the members, you’ll be made very welcome.
